HSE: Management Standards

Creating the conditions for high performance requires that important aspects of Work Design are managed effectively.

The UK Health & Safety Executive (HSE) have set out 'Management Standards' that cover six key areas of Work Design that, if not properly managed, are associated with poor health, lower  productivity & increased absence. These 'standards' relate to factors that have been identified through extensive research. They represent 'challenges' leaders must address in six key areas. They might, therefore, be discussed and reviewed in management training and leadership development.

  • Demands  -  relating to employees' workload, work patterns and the work environment.
  • Control - the degree of personal discretion employees have over work activities
  • Support - encouragement and resources for personal development
  • Relationships  -  positive working that avoids unacceptable behaviour
  • Role Clarity - clear goals, avoiding conflicting role demands
  • Change -  effective management and communication of change

Most performance management processes fail because they are based on flawed underlying assumptions about people and performance. Find out what these are and how we can transform the way your organisation thinks about performance.
