How to use 360 to Validate Competencies

Leadership Profiling: How to use 360 to Validate Competencies

Our recent competency research, reported in the national press (February 2009), shows that many competency models are poorly defined. The behaviours they identify don't relate to the specified competency, and there's too much overlap and duplication. Important, underlying factors, such as actions that help build trust, are not identified. This reduces the value in leadership development, talent management and coaching for organisational success

It is now possible to run a competency 'health check' - known as competency validation - to review the psychometric properties of competency models. This can be done with Pario online 360, using a questionnaire based on your existing competencies and statements. The 360 is completed by different groups of work associates giving feedback on managers' behaviour. The validation is backed by in-depth analysis to highlight what relevant groups, including external stakeholders, regard as significant.

Competency validation is a relatively new idea but one that offers considerable benefit to organisations. It helps ensure that talent management and leadership development processes are focused on the most important aspects of behaviour. It is then possible to update competency models to achieve levels of reliability associated with the best psychometric tests.

Most performance management processes fail because they are based on flawed underlying assumptions about people and performance. Find out what these are and how we can transform the way your organisation thinks about performance.

Combine a 360 pilot study, focusing on 10-25 managers, with in-depth Competency Validation... to create a powerful psychometric that can be used with confidence
